ArtSci and Ethics of Responsibility

Seminar: Ethics of responsibility in light of Art-Science collaborations

Cooperation between art and science has established itself as an independent field in both disciplines and is mostly summarized under formats such as ArtSci, artistic research and Artistic Residencies. The question, which results such collaborations can deliver and what are the expectations of artists and scientists, is largely unresolved. In this joint seminar together with the Zürcher Hochschule der Künste, we want to explore questions of ethics in sciences and art. We will place a specific focus on the role of responsibility in science’s and art’s approach to the world.

Furthermore, we ask what effects the cooperation of art and science can have in general, and what those involved in this process along with society in general can expect from it. What can artists and scientists learn from each other and what can be negotiated together?

This ethics and art project week is intended as a meeting in person of artists of the Zurich University of the Arts and scientists from NCCR Molecular Systems Engineering with the idea of working collaborative in small groups. Additional to a laboratory visit on site in Basel, we want to discuss these topics with guests from the fields of art, science, ethics and ethnography and gain insights into the previous experiences of artists in cooperation with scientists.

At the end of the week, each participant/group should have developed a contribution (text, image) with questions and arguments regarding the topics we discussed.
