Let microorganisms do the talking

Maya Minder, Philip Rottmann

This work is based on a microbial encounter. Lactobacillus acidophilus was the starting point of a collaboration between the artist Maya Minder and the biochemist Philip Rottmann (NCCR MSE). Both working with this microorganism, one within wild fermentations and the other within gene modifications, joined together to produce fluoroscent kimchi in the lab as an act of encounter two separate worlds.

Maya Minder is a artist working in the field of science, cooking and biohacking who uses a kitchen as her lab. Her project is called Gasthaus: Fermentation and Bacteria and is an ongoing artist research project with outlines in citizen science (DIY/DITO/DIWO). Subjects around her work are fermentation, hospitality, biohacking, Slow Food, biologic wisdom, social transformation, food waste, feminism, art and politics. She is part of the slow food youth movement and the international biohacking network called hackteria.org.
